- CHAPTER SEVEN -

While hurrying away from the dragon stalls, I search everywhere for Elan. I can’t see her anywhere. I call, “Elan? Where are you?” It would be so much easier if I could speak in her mind as she does in mine. I run around until I reach the spot I saw her last night. “Elan! Where are you?” I call again between the blare of the horns.

A flock of Valkyries flies over me and heads straight for Heimdall’s point for the entrance of Bifrost. I wish I could find my dragon and join them. Searching high and low, I run around the academy another time. I am constantly distracted by the Valkyries flocking to the entrance of Bifrost. I spot Rota and her friends flying together toward the departure spot. Again, it pulls at my heartstrings. Even though I helped save Rota and stopped her from being harmed any further by the frost giant, they still do not see me as equal and still want to belittle me. Searing pain shoots through my shoulder and my arm, and I peek at my scarred shoulder and rub it.

Another shadow passes over me, and I glance up, expecting to see another winged Valkyrie. Instead, I spot the creature that attacked Heimdall—the one that scratched my arm. I’m about to drop to the ground and hide behind a boulder when I realize it isn’t interested in me. It is flying in an odd direction away from the bottom of Odin’s castle, away from the depths of the mountain. I can’t help but think that this is odd. It is a mystery to me how it is flying around so freely when I have been telling people about it. Surely, they must’ve gone to look for it now, and I’m not the only one who has seen it. Heimdall has also seen it and told Odin about it. I rub my shoulder and keep searching for Elan.

Another horn blares, and I give up my fruitless search for Elan. It’s incredible how much I miss her, even though I’ve only known her for such a short time. She is so amazing, and the fact that she’s chosen me makes my longing for her more like an addiction.

I have little time left to catch the opening to Midgard before the blare of the horn stops, so I start the climb up the sheer face of the mountain. I claw, push, and drag myself up until, finally, I reach the edge of the cliff, where I hook my fingers into a crevice and throw a leg over the side, yanking myself up. My back arches as I crouch on all fours. Slowly, I stand and regain my breath, only to be met with Heimdall’s glare of disappointment.

“Young wingless Valkyrie! What are you doing back here?” His feet are shoulder width apart, and his fists are on his hips. His horned helmet casts an eerie shadow over me. “You know you cannot be here.”

My shoulder aches some more, and I instantly start looking for the creature, but it never shows.
